Equilibrium (2002) | Opposite Emotions.

When talking about Equilibrium we must talk about emotions, first because the theme of the film is based on them and second because it´s one of the films that has generated the most disparity of reactions between the public and specialized criticism, critics treated her very poorly and this influenced not to be distributed worldwide, on the other hand the general public liked, receiving very good impressions even though their arrival to more people in the world was due to the use of the internet.

Equilibrium presents us with a dystopian future where humanity has survived World War III and as a means to avoid further wars governments, have decided to deprive people of emotions through the administration of a drug. The story centers on John Preston a cleric who is part of a unit known as the Tetragrammaton, who are trained from childhood in a martial art known as "Gun Kata" that mixes the use of weapons with close combat, these clerics aim to ensure that people do not commit crimes related to emotions, such as laughing, crying, reading a book, painting, listening to music; in a summarized way express and / or appreciate any type of art that can arouse emotions in people. But after some events related to the desertion of his partner make Preston start to see the world in another way.

Going deeper into the film, we can understand why the critics did not appreciate it or did not give their approval, we must first mention the influences that are reflected in the film, influences such as Ray Bradbury (Farenheit 451) with burning books , George Orwell with (1984) due to invasive propaganda presented on the big screens, state oppression and the figure of a single leader, as well as the novel by Aldous Huxley (A Happy World) through the presentation of a utopian world where humanity advances by eradicating the war, but in exchange for eliminating components of society such as family, art, cultural diversity, religion and literature among others and even The Matrix has an influence on it with the scenes of actions and costumes.

After talking about these points we can see how the film itself is a challenge. Because having so many influences and so high level, with the only common point that is the future of humanity could be lost in a sea of ideas, but in Equilibrium achieves a correct harmony between them, despite the fact that at times film can feel flat, we must remember that our protagonists and characters lack emotions this is another fact that should not be overlooked, the color tones give us that atmosphere without feelings that surround the city, which reminds us that you will not feel much to throughout history.

And this is where we present the most important of the film when our protagonist awakens to the emotions and suddenly remembers the things that he did and falls crying, Kurt Wimmer moves away from presenting the history of the political concepts of society and focuses more in the individual and how our emotions play an important role in the decisions we make and how expressing or silencing them can make a difference both in ourselves and in the people around us.
