Reservoir Dogs - Lets talk film / The birth of a style

in #film7 years ago

Six men are hired by a man to execute a diamond heist, things go terribly wrong when cops show up. One of the men in the gang was actually a rat, who was helping the cops. All the men point guns at each other trying to figure out who the rat is. This is the premise of Quentin Tarantino's crime thriller "Reservoir Dogs". This film is has the quality of a good court room drama, but without any courts. This was the film that Tarantino wrote after he sold "True Romance", he thought of producing this film on his own and wrote it for a very tight budget. But, Tarantino himself didn't know that his film was going to be one of the top hundred films of all time.

What makes this heist film different from others is that, there is no scenes in the film that shows the heist. We come to know about the heist from the conversation of the characters. By throwing us into the middle of the intense action we are always catching up with the story and keeps us at the edge of our seats. Just 10 mins into film, we'll be hooked. This is seen in every other Tarantino film, he keeps us hooked by making us beg for more. This film also opened the Tarantino style to the world of cinema. Tarantino got a huge fan following from all over the globe, especially Asia. In one of the interviews Tarantino told, how all his Asian's were going crazy when he announced to make a movie with Bruce Willis.

Tarantino's signature non-linear screenplay and his use of violence is seen in "Reservoir Dogs", the birth of his style. By breaking the chronology the film actually appears like a huge jigsaw puzzle, the audience are meant to solve the puzzle throughout the film. This is actually a genius way to keep everyone engaged and also it makes the story much more unpredictable.

Many new films shows the best action scenes, but they all forget completely about the dialogues. Filmmakers usually have 'Show not tell' idea, but this is not always the case. Dialogues also play a major role in the film. Quentin Tarantino's dialogues are written with a lot of care. It can be seen not only in "Reservoir Dogs", but in all the other movies.

The most terrifying scene of the film is the ear chopping scene. This scene is very disturbing to watch. When Vic Vega is put inside a room with a cop, he takes his razor blade out he chops the cops ears off. This is very artistically done, the violence happens at almost midway of the film and it helps us get used to the blood sheds coming in the future. This is the scene which made many of the audience hate the film in its initial release. But, after 25 years of it release the scene became legendary.

I highly recommend everyone to watch this film. You can see how Tarantino started out his carrier and how his style was completely formed in his first film itself. For more posts like this follow me.

A brash, brutal crime-caper film, Reservoir Dogs has enough raw energy for 10 motion pictures and more than enough rough stuff to traumatize the sensitive. But not only does Dogs have teeth, it has brains hahahah
No matter how many times you've freeze-framed the bit at the end, it's still up there with Die Hard and Taxi Driver as one of the great once-a-year indulgences.

My favorite scene is the "restroom joke".
