This 2011 Iranian film directed by Asgar Faradhi is truly a thought provoking master piece. A Separation is a movie which deals with core concept of how us normal working class people behave when they are put through some of life most difficult challenges. The reason for creating this post is to create an awareness about this movie, so that more number of people can watch and appreciate it.

REVIEW

This is a story of a couple who are going through a divorce and the only person who is keeping them together is their daughter. The mother is trying to get her daughter a better education and life in other country. But, the father will not be able to leave the country, because his father has Alzheimer's disease. This leads to their splitting up. No one in this movie is doing anything wrong, Everyone is in a position that makes them react in a certain way. This element can be noticed in all of the Asgar Faradhi's films. 

What makes any movie a master piece is the level of conflicts it can manage to deliver. A Separation has many conflicts some between the characters and some between the character and his own self. Every single detail is very well thought and as the story movies forward we can see the importance of every single details that were previously shown.

The movie doesn't have a background score and this make it listen to your own voices deep inside you while watching it. This movie is the best example for what "pure cinema", because every single scene in the film relies in the performances of the actors and not on music or any other things.

We see how the religious beliefs plays an important role in this film. Religion is the most important things in a typical Iranian family. The values of Quran is depicted beautifully. We see the power that holy book carries in the minds of the people there. 

The in this film is very beautifully written and the characters are unforgettable. This is not some movie you want to watch when you are doing some other work, even if you are doing some other work while its playing on your monitor. It has the power to suck you in and never let you go till its finished.

Conclusion:

I have watched this film more than a couple of times and when every I watch, I find a new meaning in it. Very few number of films can do this. Its a must watch to not only learn about people in Iran but also to learn about your own self.
