A Filmmakers Diary (December 2016)
“Pain is temporary, film is forever!” - John Milius
We are only in mid December and I can say this month has been quite hectic already.
First, just some background information. I am in the process of creating a film company (that will start mainly in music videos) for this I have two music videos in the making to lunch the company. (Let’s call them video number 1 and video number 2). The interesting part is they have been in production limbo for about a year… I could probably write an all book on the reasons that make it so, but just take my word for it, It is insane… sometimes it seems like a cosmic conspiracy.
So, couple months ago when we where getting ready for film number 1, something happen that made it impossible to get it done. So the musician and I decided we should take another song and do it first. I made the mistake of doing it, not felling very inspired, I was really just thinking of film number one. Result: It was not that good and I got the editing with out a general idea of what it should be… It was a complete blank canvas and I did not like the paint that I had. But I started to get the puzzle together.
In comes December:
After weeks and endless hours and all nighters editing, me and the musician decide it should be cancelled. It was actually a good thing, because I genuinely did not like the video and there was many other things going on. But all the hard work put into it for nothing also made it a bit harder to let it go. But so it was and I erased the project, both from the hard drive and mind.
The first day of the month it was when video number 2, got resurrected. I went and did location scoutings with my macro crew and it was very nice. Very excited I was. All was good and I started the pre production. However things could not be good for long… so… the actress decided she was not interested in doing the film anymore.
Just when it started rolling I lose an integral part of the team. So now I need to find an actress (I have no budget to pay her by the way) and pretty soon, because the director of photography will soon be unavailable too… Hoping this week I manage to fix that.
A few days ago, the musician from video number one, calls me and says that he wants to do it now. So tomorrow I will finish making a straight jacket for the video. And on friday, video number one will be filmed! Can’t believe it.
Let’s hope the next “Filmmaker’s diary” is a much better one.
Also this month there was an effort to get some funds that unfortunately did not pan out. Next investor.
“What I always tell people is… Unless you are so passionate about filmmaking that you would rather live out of your car than not do it, find something else to do as a career and do filmmaking as a hobby. This industry is one of the hardest to break into and be successful. It takes a lot of passion and dedication for it to get anywhere…” - Ryan Connolly
If you upvote this article you will be helping us making this films come to live. And believe me, we could use the support.
if you need gofers and crew, you may want to see if there is a local community access TV station; if so, there may be people willing to sign on with a project for some experience
I had worked at the access station in Austin, and there were always people would would volunteer for a project for that experience
Thanks for the tip @stevecoins I am all set on crew, macro but it can get it made. I'll keep that in mind for another project. Thanks
