Split (Film): Review.

in #film6 years ago (edited)

As I explained in my previous post, in which I spoke about Unbreakable, today I'm going to talk about Split. Yes, another film by director M. Night Shyamalan, but as I said, I had the intention of seeing both films of his filmography with the aim of refreshing my memory from now on, and thus see Glass when it is released.

Year: 2016
Category: Psychological, Horror-Thriller.
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Cast: James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley.

Plot

The film tells the story of a man who suffers from a unique mental disorder, which causes him to have 23 different personalities, which alter each other in a random way. In the middle of a schizophrenic attack, he kidnaps three girls, who must find out which personalities can help them escape before the darkest and sinister part of their kidnapper is revealed.

Opinion

The script is excellent and is narrated in an intelligent way, well enough armed to stand out on the stage that we have witnessed in recent years. The film has fabulous interpretations of Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley and a great James McAvoy.

The argument of the film, in a certain way, seeks to show us the capacity of the human mind, the power of the mind to change the reality of matter and body, and may exceed the limits previously established in any conception of character previously studied. This idea is based on the vision of the director, who thinks that the physical and mental capacity of man is much higher than what is generally thought, and that such almost incredible capacities are manifested in a small number of individuals. All this, of course, gives rise to the universe that the director has created to unfold the plot of this series of films to which Split belongs.

All this psychological background also seeks to raise the dilemma between whether to consider people with mental disorders simply as that, as people with problems that need treatment, or if instead we should dig much deeper into the depth of their minds and see them as individuals with potential that must be developed, and to which we should pay more attention and interest.

The film was designed according to a dark and tense atmosphere, which introduces us in a certain way into the disturbed mind of the protagonists, while playing with the present and the past, showing flashbacks that help the spectator to better understand the behaviors of certain characters. We must also highlight the fast and forceful beginning of the film, and at the same time, the appropriate rhythm with which everything is developed to provide depth and evolution of the plot.

Basically, the film seeks to lead us to a specific moment in order to witness the appearance of a new personality of the character. And that's what probably provokes the most suspense in the whole movie, since it manages to arouse our curiosity, until the fact happens.

I must say that I personally liked the film, since it managed to keep me totally entertained while watching it, the performance of McAvoy was simply great, and Anya Taylor-Joy accompanies him in a very complementary way. With that said, I think I'll see Glass when it's released.

Score

7/10

The film is based on an interesting premise that the director exploits for an hour and a half. A well written script, strong and heartrending characters and a unique figure that shines in the film: James McAvoy. Personally I recommend it, the film is quite entertaining.
