In Charly, a film that Ralph Nelson directed in 1968, adapting the excellent novel Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, a premise of science fiction (a man with mental retardation progressed in his IQ by means of a drug experiment) was the excuse to psychoanalyze the society of those years of hippism, LSD, feminism and liberal movements. Limitless is also a new proposal that tries to do the same with the present society.

Plot

Aspiring writer Eddie Morra suffers from chronic stagnation, but his life takes a turn as soon as an old friend introduces him to the NZT, a revolutionary medication that allows him to fully exploit his potential. With every nervous impulse, Eddie can remember absolutely everything he has read, seen or heard, learn any language in a day, understand complex equations and enchant everyone he meets. as long as he continues taking the experimental drug.

Opinion

The film is based on that erroneous but widespread belief that we do not use the full potential of our brain. This point of departure, almost ridiculous, can make you feel a prior rejection towards the film. It will be necessary to leave aside that preventions to enjoy the film that is not intended to be more than entertainment. Fortunately, this belief is only used as a trigger for the action and not as a theoretical basis to launch messages or as a proclamation of a reality.

It is not surprising that Bradley Cooper is the executive producer of the film, because his role is overwhelming, his presence is constant. This results in a product that seems designed for its promotion as an actor, to allow it to take a step towards the leading roles. The idea could be an excuse to compose a catalog of his interpretive records and a representation that he can do a good job, because history requires numerous transformations to the protagonist. Cooper does his job very well by showing the changes in appearance and his passage through the different states of addiction are always credible. De Niro is on autopilot the whole movie, that is, the classic to which he has accustomed us without much effort, except for one scene, in which he lets us see his acting level.

In general, the film is very entertaining, it relies on charismatic personalities and offers occasional features of intelligence, although it is also irregular enough in its development to not provoke enthusiasm in the viewer. It has the elements that it must have, without an extraordinary exaggeration. The spectator in this case will not be disappointed. You can not see Limitless with the idea of finding what is usually called a masterpiece, but with the intention of enjoying a good time.

I do not know if looking for an ideological background to the story would presuppose too much of the authors. The fact is that he manages to touch the ego to some of us and so we project ourselves immediately into the winner and join the euphoria of his rise.

In conclusion, there are not too many things to say without mentioning spoilers, Limitless can be considered a fun film. It's not a movie that's going to change the story, and I guess we will not even remember it a few weeks after we've seen it. But, if you do not analyze too much the plot and the scientific and ideological issues, you can spend an entertaining time.
