Year: 2015
Category: Biographical, Crime, Thriller.
Director: Brian Helgeland.
Cast: Tom Hardy, Emily Browning, David Thewlis, Duffy, Christopher Eccleston, Chazz Palminteri.

Plot

The story of two twin gangster brothers, Reggie and Ronnie Kray, two of the most famous criminals in the history of London and the organized crime empire they created in the 60s.

Opinion

In the 60s, Reggie Kray is a former boxer who become a London gangster, where he also has a nightclub, and decides to extort the psychiatrist of his twin brother Ron, who is being held in a mental hospital, in order to let it out, which he does, not without first warning Reggie that Ron is highly dangerous, and that he suffers a kind of paranoid schizophrenia.

Reggie meets Frances, the sister of his driver, whom he will quickly become his girlfriend. Then we see how Reggie and Ron fight for control of the city, and how the criminal life affects the relationship between Reggie and Frances.

The film is adapted from John Pearson's book The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins, and maintains a classic format of biographical genre, the typical voice-over narration of one of the protagonists.

The direction is great, especially the editing. The staging is wonderful, showing an excellent recreation of the London of the 60s. The script is acceptable, but I feel that trying to remain faithful to the biographical genre affects the dynamism that history could have had.

The best of the film without a doubt is Tom Hardy, who not only gives us an excellent performance, but two, because he plays Reggie Kray and his brother Ron, a character that transpires violence, everything that this character does is violent, from the dialogues, the way he takes the cigar, even how talks and eats.

I think it's a good film, in which Tom Hardy shines, the rest of the actors do an acceptable job but not necessarily good, and the technical work is also good, the main problem is in the story, since it is something repetitive in many aspects, Showing things previously seen in Casino and Goodfellas, just to mention a few, what we see is the classic ascent of the criminal, who then gets the girl, but that the relationship is complicated when there are problems with his criminal life, and finally face justice. That lack of originality in some aspects, and that I personally attribute to the fact that the film is in the biographical genre, is what I did not like.

Score

7/10

Excellent direction, great performance of Tom Hardy as two characters, and a script between regular and bad, make a film that can be seen mainly by the Hardy and the setting. Yes, he did it really well, that's why he's one of my favorite actors.

Yes, he definitely has a gift. He was very good even in a superhero movie Venom.
