Want an endless stream of movie ideas? Then why not try Six Degrees of Netflix Recommendations? The rules are simple, watch any previously unseen movie on Netflix, give it a positive rating, and watch the first previously unseen film recommendation.

Let's take a look at Loosetooth's journey into the unknown...

The starting point for the chain, or degree one, was 2004’s The Woodsman starring Kevin Bacon, about a paedophile who returns to his old home after leaving prison, this led to a string of films about murder, starring the likes of Cher, Gary Oldman, and Ally Sheedy.

The sixth film in the chain was The Killing Time starring Beau Bridges and Kiefer Sutherland, about a murderous sociopath who impersonates the new sheriff of a small town. While the old sheriff is planning to murder his mistress’ husband and pin it on the newcomer.

Which leads us to the next six degrees…

Brotherhood of Justice.jpg

Degree Seven: Brotherhood of Justice (1986)

A group of high school students, including Keanu Reeves and Billy Zane, sick of the violence at their school form The Brotherhood of Justice. Initially the group start off as a neighbourhood watch: Junior Edition, but quickly become a misguided vigilante group who have a particular dislike for new student Kiefer Sutherland.

Degree Eight: Tuff Turf (1985)

James Spader plays the new kid in town who takes a liking for the main squeeze of the local tough guy delinquent. It starts off as an edgy fish-out-of-water tale, before morphing into Ferris Bueller’s Day Off somewhere in the middle, while the third act becomes a very violent affair with several people getting shot and Spader and the tough guy having an epic fight in an old warehouse.

Angel 1984.jpg

Degree Nine: Angel (1984)

Fifteen-year-old Molly is an honour student at an expensive prep school, but at night she becomes street walking prostitute Angel in order to may for education. Angel works Hollywood Boulevard which plays host to an eclectic set of characters, a street mime, an aging cowboy who regales passers-by with tales of rodeos and old Hollywood, and a transvestite sex worker who’s very reminiscent of Jack Lemon in Some Like It Hot. But if Molly’s life wasn’t tough enough there’s a serial killer bumping off hookers.

Degree Ten: New Best Friend (2002)

Dreadful TV movie starring ‘She was in Dawson’s Creek’ and ‘oh it’s the girl from The Craft’ about a poor girl and social outcast who goes to college and is befriended there by a group of privileged sorority girls who don’t like it when the new girl starts to become popular.

The Skulls III.jpg

Degree Eleven: The Skulls III (2004)

This is the only issue with this method of movie selection, sure you end up watching films you’d never have looked at twice and find some absolute gems along the way, however you can also end up watching sequels to movies you’ve also never seen, but rules are rules…

The original movie starring Joshua Jackson and Paul Walker followed a working-class student who gets into an Ivy League school’s secret society, but doesn’t like how the future elite do things. The Skulls III sees a female student try and get into the all-male society…but doesn’t like how the future elite do things.

Degree Twelve: When a Stranger Calls (2006)

Directed by Simon West who’s best known for action film like Con Air and The Expendables 2 When a Stranger Calls tells the tale of a young girl who takes a babysitting job at a remote luxury home, and starts to get nuisance phone calls. Essentially it’s the first ten minutes of Scream stretched out to an hour and a half.

Next up: The Glass House (2001)
