Superbad (2007) - Goldslick Vodka As Motif

A film like this relies so much on execution. The direction, writing, performances, editing all hit right on point.

A great high school classic style film from the 2000's.

Directed by Greg Mottola, written by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg

One fun and core motif here is the Goldslick Vodka that Becca asks for early in the film.

This becomes the item, the object that will grant Evan connection to her. It becomes the key alcohol that represents all alcohol in this world. It is the gold in the gold heist. It is the treasure.

When the glass bottle drops to the floor and smashes open, we have lost more than just liquor.

The fact that all this is built on the guys' insecurity and inability to connect interpersonally with the girls they like, the fact that they themselves proclaim alcohol as their only chance at romance, this only makes the story all the more funny.

Give us the "gold" of the dead-serious bank robbery movie, but put it in the absurdity of the world of high school romance and all that comes along with your early years of "dating."

Be well.
