Review Film: LOGAN LUCKY (2017)

in #film7 years ago

Upon his return from hiatus, Steven Soderbergh presented the antithesis of the best-selling film of his career, Ocean's Eleven. Still about the robbery, just without luxury, sophisticated technology, and elegance. Instead of an experimenter, his character is a group of poor, dappled-clad, ignorant, with a "technologist" who cannot distinguish mobile phones and homes and wake up late at Hari-H. Even Soderbergh helped turn James Bond into a wild criminal. Logan Lucky looks cool and fun without the need to try hard to be cool and pretentious.

In the script by Rebecca Blunt's pseudonym Jules Asner, the director's wife Channing Tatum plays Jimmy Logan who has just been fired from construction work and is caught in custody with his ex-wife, Jo (Katie Holmes). Concerned about the economy, Jimmy plans to rob a safe in a NASCAR racecourse with the help of his two siblings, Clyde (Adam Driver), a bartender who loses his hand in Iraq also believes the Logan family is cursed with endless misfortune and Mellie (Riley Keough) a spicy mouthed salon. Also recruited is Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) who is languishing in jail as a provider of explosives.

Jimmy, as the brain of the mission, comes up with "10 robbery rules" consisting of "have a plan", "have a backup plan" to "shit happens", indicating that he is not a savvy, as the way he composed the heist, although based on layered planning, its success involves many coincidences and ignorance of the victim. But the movie did not want to play smart, made as entertainment as it pleased. Do not forget, we're watching a movie called "Logan Lucky" instead of "Logan Smart" or "Logan Genius". the Blunt (or Asner) scenario is neater than it seems, contains a very solid structure in relating the various narratives that go hand in hand. In addition to the execution of the robbery, there was the return of Dayton White (Sebastian Stan) racer, the contest followed by Jimmy's daughter Sadie (Farrah Mackenzie), to the jail chaos, ending up in interlock with investigations by FBI agents Sarah Grayson (Hilary Swank). Occasionally, a comedy based on the absurdity of the situation and dialogue a la Coen Brothers (fake hand sucked vacuum machine, chat about Game of Thrones passing through his book) enliven the atmosphere.

After three years of absence, Soderbergh apparently has not lost touch, moving the flow with the spirit of fun full of energy while still paying attention to the narrative accuracy. The movie is wild but easy to digest, lost in the groove and surprise layered hers. Representing the soul of Logan Lucky, rather than following a typical heist music template, the accompaniment of more crunchy and "crude" country songs, with Take Me Home, Country Roads as the core soul was applied, produced a distinctive aesthetic distinction, Soderbergh's strength in terms of directing the ensemble cast is also clearly plastered, giving each shining a glowing chance. Tatum with his Southern accent, Driver with an awkward closing, and Craig as a thief of attention through the eccentric side of worry-busting if James Bond limits the range of his role. Even the small roles of Seth MacFarlane and Hilary Swank did not go away. The latter name raises the potential for a fascinating sequel even though the acquisition of Box Office is killing that hope. But for Soderberg, who revolutionized independent cinema through Sex, Lies, and Videotape, dared to recreate his Solaris Tarkovsky, and make Sasha Gray a major player in The Girlfriend Experience, nothing is impossible.
