Capsule Film Review: Yves Saint Laurent (2014)

in #film6 years ago

2014 French biopic Yves Saint Laurent is dedicated to one of the greatest fashion designers of 20th Century. Plot begins in 1957 when young Yves Saint Laurent (played by Pierre Niney) enjoys reputation of wunderkind in respectable fashion house of Christian Dior. His career is interrupted by military draft which creates extremely traumatic experience for Saint Lauren, man who doesn't put much effort in hiding his homosexuality. He is rescued by entrepreneur Pierre Bergé (played by Guillaume Gallienne) who becomes his lover, business partner and manager. Under his guidance Saint Lauren and his fashion creations become part of 1960s social revolution, but in 1970s his success leads to too much alcohol, drugs and destructive relationships with other men. Despite mostly successful attempts to recreate 1950s and 1960s and Niney's excellent role, Yves Saint Laurent suffers from script that can't compress protagonist's life into coherent narrative. Opportunity to dwell on 1960s and role Yves Saint Laurent had in those events is also missed.
