Capsule Film Review: Walking on Sunshine (2014)

in #film6 years ago

2014 British film Walking on Sunshine is a jukebox musical that tries to pay homage to 1980s pop music in a same way Mamma Mia! paid homage to ABBA. The plot is very simple - young woman named Taylor (played by Hannah Atherton) comes to Apulian villa to visit her sister Maddie (played by Annabel Scholey) and discovers that Annabel's next husband is Raf (played by Giulio Beruti), local youth with whom she had a summer romance many years ago. Script by Joshua St Johnson is just an excuse for elaborate dance and song numbers, which are directed well by Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini. All that, however, can't hide lack of any "deeper" and meaningful content, and apart from compressed forms of 1980s nostalgia, Walking on Sunshine doesn't offer anything remarkable to the audience.
