Capsule Film Review: Snake Eyes (1998)

1998 thriller Snake Eyes has the plot set in Atlantic City during spectacular world championship boxing match. Protagonist, played by Nicolas Cage, is corrupt local police detective who must investigate assassination of US defence secretary which happened at the venue during the actual match, forcing him to interrogate tens of thousands members of audience and try to flush out the killer. Directed by Brian de Palma, Snake Eyes features his baroque style and some of the most impressive tracking shots in 1990s film history. Unfortunately, all that is wasted thanks to inept script by David Koepp that gives away the mystery too early and wraps up the plot with unconvincing deus ex machina.
