Capsule Film Review: One Tough Cop (1998)

in #film5 years ago (edited)

New York police detective Bo Dietl had quite eventful career including a case that would serve as plot for Abel Ferrara’s Bad Lieutenant. It was matched only by his efforts on media self-promotion, which included autobiographical book adapted into 1998 film One Tough Cop. In it Dietl is played by Stephen Baldwin and portrayed as policeman who stops at nothing while trying to remove violent criminals from New York streets , and that includes co-operation with his childhood friend Richie LaCasa (played by Mike McClone), now a local mob boss. While he seeks help from Richie in finding two thugs who brutally raped a nun, things gets complicated thanks to his long-time partner Duke Finnerly (played by Chris Penn), who succumbs into alcoholism and gambling addiction, becoming a target of nasty loan shark Frankie "Hot" Salvino (played by Paul Guilfoyle). To make things even worse, FBI gets interested in Dietl as an ideal man to set a trap for his old friend Richie. One Tough Cop is directed by renowned Brazilian filmmaker Bruno Barreto, but his skills aren’t enough to overcome limits of the script by Jeremy Iacone, which tries to stuff as much cop film cliches as possible into 90 minutes of running times. Apart from Penn, always dependable in character roles, the cast isn’t particularly memorable, and One Tough Cop at times looks like unintentional parody of itself.

RATING: 4/10
