Capsule Film Review: Iron Man (2008)
The first film of Marvel Cinematic Universe was big, but nowadays looks small in the context of world’s greatest film franchise. In 2008 Iron Man, one of the lesser known comic book superheroes, had its origin story set in rather dark context of real life (and today still ongoing) conflict in Afghanistan and issues dealing with American military-industrial complex. The role of Tony Stark, playboy industrialist and talented inventor who develops powerful exoskeleton, was one of the finest in the career of Robert Downey Jr. while his fellow actor Jon Favreau provided fine direction, with more emphasis on drama and less on special effects. Although not very memorable, Iron Man provides solid first chapter in what might be the most popular saga in recorded history.
