Capsule Film Review: Hercules (2014)

in #film6 years ago

The most famous hero of Greek mythology and the most popular protagonist of sword and sandals films gets revisionist makeover in Hercules, 2014 film directed by Brett Ratner. Hercules (played by Dwayne Johnson) is not demigod, but a mortal man who earns his living as mercenary for warring city-states of Ancient Greece, followed by the band of associates that include those who use his alleged supernatural descent and abilities as a clever form of psychological warfare. Their skills are, however, tested when Hercules and his men have to face mysterious army in Thracia with apparently magical abilities. Starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the role not very different from Scorpio King, this film at first look just like another mindless Hollywood summer tentpole, but it is much shorter, streamlined and less dependent on CGI. Although not too inspired or too memorable, Hercules provide solid entertainment, partly due to diverse and experineced cast.
