Capsule Film Review: Drag Me to Hell (2009)

in #film6 years ago

Made in 2009, Drag Me to Hell is one of the extremely rare Hollywood horror films that deal with some unpleasant real life socioeconomic issues. At least in the beginning, when young and ambitious loan officer Christine Brown (played by Alison Lohman) tries to impress her bosses by acting tough on an elderly lady who, just like so many people who experienced 2008 financial crisis, can't pay mortage and will ultimately lose her home. Unfortunately for Christine, old lady also happens to be a powerful Gypsy sorceress and response to loan extension rejection is terrible curse on Christine. She gets hounded by disturbing apparitions and soon learns that she has three days to lift the curse or face eternal damnation. Directed by Sam Raimi, Drag Me to Hell features his trademark combination of horror and dark humour, with some rather ingenious scenes that try rise above cliched plot. Unfortunately, script did poor service to Christine's character thus making Alison Lohman's talent tunderused.
