Ocean's Thirteen

I previously wrote 2 posts regarding the scams/hustle names used in Ocean's 11 & 12. They proved popular so here is the final installment of the Ocean's franchise, and for me a much better movie than 12. If you wish to check out the other posts, you can find them here:

Ocean's 12

The Reverse Big Store

Rusty describes the entire scam as a "Reverse Big Store". Although there is no real evidence as to what it means, the most obvious theory is that it simply means rigging "ALL" the casino games.

Billy Martin

When the team is discussing how to get revenge against Willy Bank, they decide to offer him a "Billy Martin". Billy Martin was both a famous 2nd base-man for and also the manager of the N.Y Yankees. Martin was fired (or quit) as the manager in 1978, rehired in 1980, and given a second chance. He was then subsequently fired and re-hired by the Yankees numerous times during the 1980's. The implication here is that the gang are offering Willy Bank a second chance to do the right thing, which he doesn't, to his downfall.

The Gilroy

Linus uses an especially powerful pheromone to intoxicate and seduce Abigail. Apparenttly, this was an in-joke on Tony Gilroy who wrote the Bourne screenplays (Bourne Identity,Supremacy & The Bourne Ultimatum), all which starred Matt Damon. He also wrote and directed "Michael Clayton" which stars George Clooney and was produced by Steven Soderbergh. As to why, I guess we'll have to read between the lines, but maybe women find him irresistible.

The Brody

Linus's fake nose decoy is named "The Brody", in reference to actor Adrien Brody. I only hope they are good friends.

Irwin Allen

Linus tells Reuben that Rusty is going to use an "Irwin Allen". This is a homage to the legendary producer Irwin Allen who is considered one of the fathers of disaster movies and TV shows. His movies and shows often depicted ways the world would end, usually including a natural disaster. This ties in with Rusty telling Willy Bank that there is a possibility of an earthquake. It also gives the gang their exit plan for the end of the hustle, by causing everyone to leave with their winnings, and not lose it back to the casino.

Susan B. Anthony

There seems to be some discussion and argument over the meaning here. During the movie, the characters make several references to pulling a "Susan B. Anthony" as part of their heist. This is a reference to the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin which was manufactured in 1979. It was similar in appearance and size to a regular quarter and many people dropped it into a slot machine without realizing what it was worth. This method was used twice in the film, people are using an ordinary coin, but they don't realize that it will be worth millions when it goes into the slot. We see it first with the woman in The Bank Casino who wins the jackpot, and later again by the VUP at the slot machine in the airport, after Rusty carelessly leaves him a coin to play with. Whatever the meaning, it would appear it is related to somebody not knowing the true value of something.

A Cartwheel

This refers to when Boomer impersonates a motorcycle stuntman. Very simply, doing a cartwheel, is doing something crazy to act as a distraction.

Interestingly enough to offer a " Billy Martin " is said to offer a " Mike Tyson " in the french version. Ocean 13 is my favourite. Thanks for this analysis.
