Honey We shrunk Matt Damon!

Size does matter!

This is something Matt Damon realizes in one of Alexander Paynes biggest movies, but also the least successfull one.
Maybe it's not the outer size that counts for Damon and Payne. But the inner size. "Downsizing" is huge of format, but on the inside a shrunk gimmick.

he idea is otherwise good and relevant to the entire population of the globe. As you know, the climate is pushing as people fill more and more. What do we do? One-child policy? Cut down on consumption? Or just shout 'fake news' and hope for the best? Alexander Payne has got a better idea, which is really an old idea. Right from the Fantastic Voyage into the blood vessels of the dying researcher in 1966 to the eighties Honey, I shrunk the kids, where the backyard was transformed into an unmanageable action adventure.

Alexander Payne does not shrink Matt Damon for fun.The size means something. If you go from weighing 83 kilos to 83 grams, then you will be destroying the envoirement alot less, even less than the best recycle options can. Downsizing is a sollution to the climate crisis, and it doesnt make the voluntary offer to move into the minitown Leisureland less attractive when they add up your money 10x.
Everything is bigger being small, just not Alexander Payne's movie, after a wonderful, almost perfidious diminution, where Mini-Matt is lifted up with a spatula of one of the "Giants", seams to forget his idea again. It is reduced to a gimmick, where a large Cohiba is transformed into 2,000 small cigars.
Instead, "Downsizing" is really about what all Paynes movies are about, "Men with inner pain". And to cure the inner they are taking on an outer journey.

That way, "Downsizing" becomes more a "normal" Payne movie with lots of male pain in a world that's undergoing. A world that Payne can not fully overlook. So, forget about it and the climate. Maybe go to Leisureland? There are the problems small. And a Cuban cigar costs only one dollar.
