Sleep, reality does not exist. Review of the movie "The Beginning".

in #film9 years ago (edited)

Hi all!

Some people believe that our world is only a dream of God, and that if he wakes up, we all disappear right away. There are those who believe that the universe could be created just a few minutes ago, along with all our memories of lived days and centuries of history. Someone on the contrary: considers dreams and visions as full-fledged realities, subject to certain rules and laws.

Although such hypotheses are unlikely to reflect reality and can not be verified, one thing they demonstrate quite accurately: people have always doubted the existence of objective reality, and dreams were considered something more than a simple game of the brain.

Although a lot of time has passed since the birth of religions and mystical teachings, but today the disputes around dreams and their meanings do not subside. The idea of lucid dreams shocked the whole world, and the doctrine of don Juan, which states that dreams are portals to other realities, scrupulously recorded by Carlos Castaneda, in a few days gained a mass of followers from all corners of the planet.

This topic did not pass by the Hollywood director Christopher Nolan, who was not too lazy to spend on creating a script for about ten years, to subsequently present to the world a sci-fi thriller "The Beginning".

Do not expect that in this film you will see philosophical reflections on the nature of sleep or on the principle of controlling dreams. It is also not explained how several people are able to dream the same location, or what is the system of "sleep levels" that slow the time (or accelerate the work of the brain) in a geometric progression. Everything will be very prosaic: industrial espionage; firefights; owners of large corporations, who are fully trained to defend themselves against "extractors"; wars for power, etc.

Unfortunately, the intellectualism of the film is thrown to the very last plan, giving way to disassembly for energy control, personal experiences of the main character Cobb and flight from "projections." The most notable blunder is that the young architect Ariadne, having first heard about the possibility of independently constructing dreams, figured out everything without any unnecessary questions, and the character of Leonardo DiCaprio, going to the most complicated thing, did not even bother to explain to her all the subtleties and nuances of the profession, only periodically shouted when his young student, in ignorance, made a serious mistake.

An interesting idea got a rather pale performance. Events are devoid of logic, and a whole bunch of unspoken things gave rise to a huge mountain of bewilderment, because the view of the audience about the dreams was very different from what the group of people who participated in the creation of the "Star" gave to us for dreams. Dialogs are boring and fixated on an implausible attempt to convey to the watching explanations regarding "extraction" and "implementation." You can not look at actors without regret, they did not get the most enviable roles, but everything about the relationship between the heroes and the dramas in their lives was successful and was played well.

A beautiful picture, visual effects and musical accompaniment (which, naturally, was not without the genius Hans Zimmer) - that's what pulled the film and added to it the rating, but not the script. Ten years was too little (and maybe too much) for Christopher Nolan to take his work with a greater degree of criticism and bring the story to perfection. In no comparison with the "Matrix" Vachovsky "Beginning" does not go.

However, the film is really very interesting to watch once, but do not try to comprehend it, otherwise the projections will quickly guess that the viewer was badly deceived, and the quality movie turned out to be a mediocre commercial bad taste. (No wonder the advertising was spent a huge amount of 100 million!)

The budget of the film was $ 160 million, the expenses were shared by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. The reputation of Christopher Nolan and the stunning success of the "Dark Knight" allowed us to spend on advertising a picture of $ 100 million.
