Thoughts on Tom Cruise's Mummy film.

I'll just start off by saying I loved the Mummy film from 1999 with Brendan Fraser as it's just a great fun adventure film with just a bit of scares for the kids and great comedy from John Hannah. I wouldn't class this latest offering as being related in any way to those films, it's not a reboot and it looks like it's part of a Dark Universe of new films to be released.

So we have an all star cast and in Sofia Boutella, probably the sexiest mummy to date, forget Scooby Doo style monsters wrapped in bandages, she is a bad-ass tattooed force of nature. Tom Cruise on the other hand plays Nick Morton, a less than honest soilder in the same way he plays Ethan Hunt.
The film is Mission Impossible style action with spies replaced by supernatural characters and a shadey archeologist secret order that is led by another classic horror story character played by Russell Crowe.

In lazy plot writing we get a Knights Templer history back story (the only Knight order ever mentioned by Hollywood.) in Egypt rather than being in the Holy Lands to fit in with a secret ancient Egyptian story of a princess fallen into evil ways. All of this is jack-booted into modern times via the war on terror in modern day Iraq.

Now I'm not saying this film is bad but it has flaws and is a mash of action and horror by numbers that Hollywood likes to put out as blockbusters and reboots rather than trying something new.

Worth watching?
Not the worst recent film I've watched.

Worth paying to watch at the cinima?
Maybe not unless you like Tom Cruise doing Mission Impossible stunts and fighting knight zombies.

Thanks for the review!

Seen the commercial, very hesitant! :)
But ok, perhaps worth a watch.

100% upvote for best class post with good content.

I dislike Mummy movies and Tom Cruise in general. Thanks for the review.

Thank you for that review. I loved the Mummy films, comical and entertaining, with as you say a few scary bits to keep you on the edge of your seat. Saw the trailer to this movie when went to see guardian of the galaxy and was excited until I saw Tom cruise. So now you have confirmed my fears, probably take your advice and wait for it to come on out on sky :)

Not really worth the cost, waiting for sky or DVD is a better option.
That said, a night out with Mrs Alienbutt is always good.

Thanks for the review alienbutt - will wait for Blu-ray. SK.

I really enjoyed The Mummy with Brenden Fraser, so I couldn't figure out why they were re-doing it. Also, I am a little tired of Tom Cruise, to be honest. So your review is telling me that I don't want to spend money to go see it. Thanks! :)
