The child gripped the tree’s fattest branch, heaved one leg over, and scrambled up.
She climbed until she had to listen carefully for cracking sounds from the thinner branches, and to press her body to the tree’s trunk.
The treetop bowed with every breeze or shift of her weight.
Safe.

I've been in a place most consider safe but I find dangerous for the past week. I'd been cogitating on a fiftywords contest prompt (child) just before my little adventure. I know it's far too late to enter for that prompt, but boy does this capture my state of mind both last week and as a young and avid tree climber. Thank you for reading.

Very intriguing, @owasco! I just found this in a search for missing #fiftywords stories, as I'm just about to post the winner of the stories for the "gift" prompt. I hope you'll join us this coming week.

I'll certainly try! I tried with gift as well, but nada came to me. Thank you so much for hosting the contest - even being aware of it has opened my mind and heart.

Well that is a wonderful outcome, itself.
