Supergirl Season 3 Episode 2: 'Triggers' Review

Who is Samantha Arias?

This week, Supergirl does a superb job of building up the to-be-villain of the season, Samantha Arias aka reign, while at the same time showing just how different she is from Kara. While Kara is alone and brooding, Samantha has a daughter Ruby whom she loves very much and in whom she finds joy. At this point, it’s very difficult not to fall in love with Samantha as a character –she basically a single mom who loves her daughter and just became a recent executive in corporate America.
Furthermore, Sam (as she’s called by Lena) shows no inkling of abilities throughout the episode, and that’s not from persistent pestering from her daughter or from lack of trying herself. That presents a lot of questions which I’m pretty sure the directors want us to be asking: What will be Reign’s powers on the show and how will she come to be at odds with our heroine? And about that executive position? It's working for no other person than Lena Luthor herself, a position which leads her to meeting Kara as Kara Danvers, which we can be sure, won't be the last time they meet.

Meanwhile Kara, albeit slightly better, is still at an extremely low point following Mon-El’s forced departure from Earth, a situation taken advantage of by the episode’s villain, Psi, and which brings her to loggerheads with her best friend and new boss, Lena. Hopefully though, after this week’s confrontation, a fraction of the Supergirl we know and love might return.
