Pain.

He couldn’t concentrate because of the pain.

He squirmed, he wanted to scream but his throat was raw from screaming earlier, he twisted. There was movement all around him, he could sense it, but he couldn’t see. Something covering his eyes, he tried to raise his hand to-

---the pain was ---

The pain was like fireworks, it started as a small bright dot, expanded and burst, then another small bright dot---

---he groaned---

and felt a prick in his shoulder.

“There you go Soldier” said the voice of an angle “you should be feeling better soon.”

He drifted off, the pain was less.

“How is he?” asked the harried doctor.

“Not well” said the female navy medical specialist. ”he was starting to thrash around a bit and I was afraid he might pull loose his drips so I gave him a bit of morphine....calmed him down some”

“Exactly right “said the doctor.

“Poor boy” he said, looking down at what was left of what was once a large man of athletic build. “It’s going to be touch and go, when is that Medi-vac due?”

                              ***

Ed Strangler was being debriefed by his commanding officer.

“Hell of a thing sir” said Strangler shaking his head.“When me and the boys broke into that building and there was a literal pile of dead bodies around and in that room. I mean a big heap of em. We can’t figure it out. Everyone was dead but for him....and Hank was just BARELY alive”

Pain, muted pain now. Not so immediate. Hank drifted off.
