The Fields Of Fable- The lakes of Lily (Chapter 2)
Borris signaled to the twins with his big giant finger. "If you would like to follow me!"
The twins followed holding hands. Lucy's thick braided hair swinging as she skipped.
"See i told you it would be perfectly safe. What do you think we will see first?" Toby was swinging his picnic around with his free hand.
"Well I think possibly the elves seeing as Hermey is here. Borris, is it true that only the Elves can see us?"
Borris looks back at the twins. "Only the wood elves like Hermey." Hermey looks up adoringly at Borris, who reactes by grimacing at him. The children laugh.
"There are a few different types of Elves in the fields, maybe you will see the others." He stops. " You do realise that it's not all fairytale here, and that some of the .....residents.....are scary, evil. He kneels down in front of Toby. "Even wicked?"
Toby gulps " Yes...but they can't get us can they?"
He stands back up."Oh no.....it's perfectly safe sir. You will travel by an invisible carriage, like a safari. I will be your driver, Hermey here is your.............tour guide." He says it with an element of sarcasm.
Hermey stands up straight pulling his braces with importance.
"So here we are.....your carriage awaits." Borris gestures ahead.
The twins look forward in awe. Before them is a gold encrusted carriage.
"I told you I would give you the golden experience. Go on..... hop in!" Hermey danced around and giggled, much to Borris's annoyance.
Lucy looked confused. "Where are the horses?"
"Oh, you don't need horses, Borris pulls it!" Borris attaches the thick leather straps around his waist.
The twins giggle as they jump inside. " They definitely cant see us?" Lucy asked with an innocent caution.
"Nope definitely not. Do you want to know what you will see first?"
"Yes.....hang on a minute.....why isn't Rumpelstiltskin in there?"
"Never mind that Lucy, what will we see first?" Toby was eagerly trying to shut his sister up.
"It's Ok sir, it's a simple answer. It's because he has the gold. He is needed here by the King. Besides, he has to be there.... it was part of the deal!"
"What deal?" The twins shout in chorus.
Hermey in usual style delivers his speech fast but clear not pausing for a breath. "The deal to keep the Fables silly.......! Without the gold we cannot pay the other elves to watch the residents and if we let them out the King cannot control them!" Hermey looks up at the twins. "Got it?"
"Got it!" They cheer in unison.
"Right... so who do you think we will see first?"
Lucy was wriggling in her seat through over excitement" I think it will be unicorns.....I hope it is the unicorns."
"Ermmmmmm i think it will be more elves. What will we see first Hermey?"
"Not unicorns....not yet they are the other side of the rainbow, and elves you will see them everywhere. No we are going past the shore.................water?"
They look at each other, then back at Hermey. "Mermaids?"
"Yes!" He laughed "The beautiful mermaids!"
"Will they not see Borris, if he is not in here?"
"No one can see Borris...look?"
They peeked out of the cart, Toby shouting in panic. "Where's Borris.....the cart is still moving. Is he invisible now?"
"It's a magical coat. It turns him invisible. No one can see him. Right now don't lean out of the cart again. because once you are out, that's it they will see you and put us all in danger." He puts his face up to Toby, his stale breath forcing him backwards in his seat.
"No we wont!" Toby waffs the air and Hermey giggles.
Borris starts to charge forward the cart rocking from side to side making the twins fly across their seats giggling.
Before the cart is a screen of shimmering gold air. As Borris approached, the screen parted and a female animated voice bellowed in a dramatic and childlike fashion.
"Welcome to the Fields of Fable!"
The twins eagerly pressed their faces to the window.
Hermey coughed to get attention. "Now remember no poking your head out of the window. Got it ?"
"Got it....!" They excitedly repeated
"Soon we will be approaching the lakes of lily. This is where the mermaids can be seen sat on the rocks brushing their hair. They are the most beautiful creatures. I have a ......friend.......and we sit and talk for hours."
Hermey blushed ferociously and squirmed on his seat.
Toby sniggered. " Is it your girlfriend Hermey?"
He continued to squirm shyly smiling as he did so.
"Her name is Beatrice and she is the most beautiful Mermaid you will ever lay eyes upon!"
Lucy squeals in excitement. "They are there, look Toby they are there. There is...............10 of them!"
"Stay in the cart. I will be one moment!" Hermey jumps out as he rushes over to the mermaids. Lucy sat mesmerised by the colours of their tails. So bright and colourful, they shimmered in the sunlight. Their hair, long wavy and silky.
Hermey was right they were beautiful. They watched as Hermey approached a smaller red haired Mermaid. She had smaller and more elf like features, clearly a good match for Hermey. She stroked Hermey's hair and kissed him on the cheek as he giggled contagiously.
He waved to the mermaids and skipped back to the cart.
"Aren't they just delightful?" Hermey gazed adoringly out of the window.
Toby replied without acknowledging his question. "Hermey, what do they eat?"
"They eat mainly mussels and seaweed. They don't tend to eat other fish as they are all friends in the sea. It would be like you eating me.!" He did that irritating giggle again.
Lucy spots the most radiant rainbow. "Look.....it's a rainbow, is this where it starts.... here?"
"Ahh yes the rainbow. Very important. Yes sir it starts here, this is the beginning. It starts pretty and ends pretty but in the middle its not so nice!"
"I don't understand, it's pretty in the middle, you can see it more in the sky!" Toby was confused.
"No young sir, you don't understand. We are at the start. The fields of fable follow the rainbow, from start to finish. As you grow further into the fields, from now it will start to get a little darker! Borris did tell you they can be scary in here. It's not all fairytale you know!"
The twins looked a little concerned until Lucy leaned forward and spoke up. "So what IS at the end of the rainbow?"
"Well obviously there will be my distant cousins, the leprechauns, with the gold.....but we cant touch that its protected. And there is also the unicorns and.........well i'm not telling you anymore, you will have to wait and see. Borris......ready when you are champ!"
The cart starts to move again. "So what is next Hermey?" The twins were holding hands again, through excitement and nerves but Toby was anxiously awaiting the next stage.
"You'll see in just a moment....keep looking out the window!"
