Rajma Chawal (White rice with Kidney Beans)- Indian's Favourite -fff
I cooked today because its Friday and I had enough time for it. I cooked Rajma Chawal - Indian staple food, all the Indians love it and can go for it no matter what the time, mood or place is.
Rajma is Kidney Beans
Chawal is white rice
Let's cook the white rice first
For this you need:
White plain Rice
Cloves
Cardamom
Water
Big utensil which can work for boiling
Now since are Chawal\rice are cooked and ready, lets work on the beans.
Now let's cook the kidney beans
For this you need:
Kidney Beans
Tomato
Basic Indian Spices - Salt, Pepper powder, Turmeric, Coriander powder
Cumin seeds
Pressure Cooker
Pressure cooker is a favourite THING for Indian, essential too. Believe this - Somebody gifted my sister-in-law a pressure cooker in her wedding haha. I found it really funny.
First of all you take kidney beans. Now you have two options - Either directly cook them in a pressure cooker OR first soak them overnight in water and then cook them in any utensil you want.
So here I am going to cook in pressure cooker style.
First you put kidney beans with double amount of water in a pressure cooker and give the cooker 2-3 whistles as per the heat.
Then you chop some tomatoes. Although its entirely your choice if you want to put more vegetables in it, but this is not how its done. It has to be only tomato for that Staple taste.
This below is a basic Indian spice box - You will see this in every indian household.
Now you first take cooking oil and cumin seeds. Let the cumin seeds cook.
Now put chopped tomatoes in it:
Then add spices as per your taste and mix it all well, let it cook for a while.
Now you have your two elements - boiled kidney beans with its brown water & the tomato puree of Indian spices.
Mix both the elements in pressure and give it a whistle. This would help all the spices fuse well into the kidney beans. Then it will e ready.
Now here you go, your plate of Rajma and chawal is ready. Healthy and Indian's favourite by birth. :D
It is amazing how rice and beans is a staple food in so many cultures. I love your recipe, I also love Caribbean version, which is Western Indian. Yours is Eastern Indian. Cool.😎
oh i didnot know rice and beans are staple in other cultures as well. Good to know now 😎😎

Uhm, excuse me but this is an awesome kitchen introductory @vibesforlife, so glad to have you aboard—welcome to #fff! Has anyone told you how cool your kitchenware is though?!
I might’ve been a little timid to order a bowl of Rajma and chawal before this one—not anymore. 😉 Happy Friday Ms. Vibes.
Oh that so, I feel happy reading your comment :):)
Try it once, its a yum combination.
Love Rajma Chawal.
Many years ago, while stationed in Hawaii, I had a close friend whose beautiful wife named Aesha was from India.
At the time, I was a young bachelor.
Anyway, I was also a pretty lame and lazy cook; oftentimes resorting to home meals consisting of Cup Noodles and canned tuna; mainly because that's all I had in the cupboards most of the time.
That's why my buddy's kind wife took pity on me and cooked Rajma Chawal once a week and invited me over for dinner.
And I always took some home with me to enjoy for the next couple days.
This routine went on for months until Asha introduced me to her cousin, Ananya.
That meeting proved doubly lucky for me because Ananya was not only stunningly exotic, but also a great cook.
She loved feeding me her delicious, home cooked meals.
I can almost hear her voice now saying, "Eat! I can see your ribs. Aesha will think I am not taking of you!"
And I swear I must have put on 15 lbs. during the months we were dating...
Namaste, JaiChai
Namaste!
Oh what a lovely experience you had and what a lovely memory with Rajma Chawal.
Ananya and Aisha sounds like kind gems. ):)

no onion? ginger garlic?
No, I like to keep it heat free. Ginger and garlic increase the heat.
