Grandpa Gotta Eat—Oatmeal and Fried Egg

That Looks Like...!

Yeah, I know what it looks like, but believe it or not, it's surprisingly good.

Welcome, one and all to this week's edition of Grandpa Gotta Eat. I actually did cook what you see above, but since the cooking part really wasn't that difficult (even for me), I decided this week's entry into @foodfightfriday fell more into the eating category.

In case it is hard to tell what's sitting in that pan, that is indeed oatmeal, with chunks of apple, some crushed pecans, and a healthy dose of brown sugar, with a fried egg on top. Yes, on top, to be enjoyed together with the oatmeal.

I've eaten this a time or two before and really enjoyed it. I think, however, I forgot not to break the yolk, because the flavor was even better the last time.

The oatmeal was cooked for three minutes or so at boiling, and then I chopped up half an apple and added the pecans which I had previously smashed in a sandwich bag.

The egg was fried in olive oil on medium heat. I added salt and pepper.

I ate it out of the pan to avoid a bowl to wash, too. I'm all about keeping the cleanup to a minimum, whenever possible. That meant using the pot holder or hot pad you see underneath it to keep from scorching myself or the table.

It's part of my strict non-scorch policy.

Why This? Why Now?

I was reminded of this meal the other day because of a couple of articles I saw, one regarding eggs (we're back to wondering if they're really that healthy again), and the other about fiber (of which fruit, oatmeal and nuts are supposed to be excellent sources). Fiber, apparently, is the real superfood, with health benefits beyond the intestinal tract. I'll stop there. You get the idea.

I've been at that age for a while now where things that didn't use to hurt, hurt, such as, rolling out of bed in the morning, or reaching up to the top shelf, or bending down for something. Both my parents have been having health issues lately, and while they're over 25 years older than I am, it still has me thinking that maybe I should, you know, try to keep myself from falling apart even more, since my regular regimen of conserving energy by avoiding exercise and, you know, general movement, doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

Go figure.

So, There You Have It

I will probably try to have this particular breakfast meal once a week, while finding other things to consume. Maybe, get back into smoothies, since I'm supposed to eat a bunch of greens and fruits. Maybe even see a nutritionist to find out what foods will work best for me and my body.

Maybe.

I suppose you're right, if I'm understanding your meaning, that is. There definitely should be a health benefit to what we eat way beyond just how it tastes. Unfortunately, I know I eat more food that might not be as good for me because it generally tastes better than food that is for me. I find that to be wholly and completely unfair, but that's life. :)

I read something about health and eggs and nutritionist in the comments. I recommend checking out Dr Eric Berg. Heres is latest, on the latest egg (cholesterol) scare.

I think I've ran across Dr. Berg before and I like what he says.

My aside up in the post about eggs being bad again refers to that study Dr. Beg is talking about, I think. In the past, I may have been somewhat concerned when something was determined to be bad for, but I've seen enough back and forth on different foods now to get that depending on various factors, a lot of good things can appear bad, and bad things good, if the criteria used and the data collected can be packed either way.

For me, it's getting to what's going to be healthy intake for me—one that keeps all the levels of the bad stuff down and all the good stuff up, and manages to keep me within acceptable weight/size levels, with the energy and strength I need throughout the day, with a minimum of aches and other unwanted ailments.

You definitely know this from your own experience that not all foods are created equal for all people, and that's pretty much where I need to get to I think.

Always a pleasure, sir! I’m the exact same way with clean-up, I’ll eat whatever I make right out of the pan/pot etc. if I make a sandwich, I make it on the counter, right next to the sink so all I have to do is wipe the crumbs into the sink—el-zippo clean up time!

I’ve been on a steady attempt to eat right the past about three years, in my opinion, it takes a lot of dedication and discipline but it’s worth it. After about a year of eating this way, it became normal.

About aches and pains, I’m with you again! The worst is when you hurt yourself just going to bed!! Can’t say “I slept wrong” or “I strained my back getting out of bed,” nope! ......”yeah.. uh, all I did was sit on the edge of the bed to take off my shoes and now my neck hurts.” 😉

I'd probably opt into more paper plates and plastic utensils, but I suppose that has it's downside too (environment). I'm usually eating everything but dinner at my desk, and I don't have a sink here in my home office.

Yeah. I've done different things eating wise and none of it has really taken. Once my youngest son's family is off on their own again, providing the oldest son's family doesn't take their place, I think I can get in an eating routine with my wife that will better for the both of us. The thing is, there are things that a male should eat and things that females should have more of, so even then, there's a balance to be struck. But hopefully that will be easier than what's been happening with two younger adults and a not quite two year old who all have different likes and eating habits.

You know what man? I’ve been having this conversation more and more lately—think about this one for a minute, @glenalbrethsen.

Isn’t it interesting how we know the words to songs, players stats, the score board, what channel “x” show is on, our annual taxes, price of gas, following me? There’s a lot of things we’re taught to remember and paying attention to what we consume was never even considered—don’t remember, don’t even ask.

When I realized about 5 years ago to pay a little more attention, I think about it now and I’m like “where were you the first 35 years?!” 🤔

I have to say you're spot on with that analysis. Nutrition used to be a part of public schools, but just like everything else, with budget shortfalls come cuts, and that class, if it was offered, was typically an elective. So, that means a class like that got bumped up to a community college or higher and so people would tend not to take it just to know because it didn't fit their major.

So, that means it was left up to our parents, and while I would say mine did a decent job of feeding me (thanks Mom and Dad!), just in the last 35 years or so since I've been out of the house, the four basic food groups I grew up with has been expanded on changed, ground out, trampled on and reconstituted in some fashion. And always in a general manner, not anywhere near based on individual biology, and how that can change over time with aging, and accumulations of things and deficiencies in others.

So, basically, to get all of that, you need to go to a nutritionist, which may or may not be covered by your health plan, because even the health system doesn't pay enough attention to it, even among the more forward thinking clinics/hospitals/local health groups that like to lean more to prevention.

Reason: well, I could be cynical and say that if people had better access to that information, then did it, eating better, exercising more and lowering stress levels, that less people would get sick and thus not require the health care services nearly as much, and, whole food industries in the snacking, fast food, soft drinks, juices, alcoholic beverages and desserts arenas (at the very least) would have to revamp their products or die.

But, nah, I'm not saying that. I'd prefer to avoid a total economic collapse based on healthier individuals, thank you very much. :)

Well, I like it, so I guess that's all that matters in this case, but I would recommend it to anyone who isn't all that thrilled about oatmeal in and of itself, because it does add a flavor to it that would not be there otherwise. Plus it adds some protein to a bunch of carbs. :)

Haha… your strategy for conserving energy isn’t working? I really like that statement. I, too, started eating eggs again and I must say I do feel better. I think I went a bit overboard though because now I’m a little egged out. I’ll wait a week and see if I can get back into them. Haha… oatmeal and apples are always a winner in my book. Great to see you this week sir :)

Well, I think the strategy is sound, it's just that the body doesn't want to cooperate. :) It seems to think it needs to move more, or things like joints stiffening up and appendages falling asleep and so forth set in. Plus, I guess, the more I am stationary, especially sitting, the more likely I'm to die sooner than if I'm even standing. So, as I said, I have a sound strategy, but natural law is against me. :)

Eggs are one of those foods, I think, where moderation is key, just because it's easy to get burnt out on them. Since I tend to eat them fried rather than any other way, there's not a lot of variety of taste to them.

I actually managed to cook something somewhat different for dinner Saturday night, so I'll be talking about that this week. This one will be a near epic fail that actually turned out, thanks to my wife coming to the rescue. :)

Yay! I’m excited to read it then. Sometimes when we think we’ve failed, just applying a few tweaks can really turn things around. You’re right about the eggs. My go to is a omelette, well cooked, with a side of guacamole and tomato slices. I know, it sounds boring but my digestive system really agrees wity it. However, it’s hard eating eggs everyday for a month or two. Haha… I’m giving myself s short break in hopes that I’ll come around by next week. We shall see… 🤷🏼‍♀️

That actually looks really good. I don't know if my tastes are changing in my "old" age, but I've noticed the older I get the more and more I like eating fried eggs.

I love putting one on top of my ramen noodles, but this looks like a much healthier option.

Well, I know I've grown to like some things more and others less as I've aged, so no doubt that's happening. Something about the palate changing. I know with my youngest son, there were things that he wouldn't eat as a teenager that he actually enjoys now as a twenty-something, so it didn't take long for the change to occur.

And impart, it's becoming more adventurous. I think I'm much more apt to try something, especially in food combinations that I like separately, just for varieties sake. And if it doesn't taste like I think it should, I try something else. :)

I do this with rice and egg.

I'll need to try that then, because I do like rice, too. So, anything special to either the rice of the egg? Or just regular white rice and the fried egg?

Rice with whatever leftovers there are, can add some soy sauce or bbq sauce to it. Then egg on top, that's it.

Looks good to me. I would have something like that to eat. Exercise is a dirty word in our home too. I get up and move about every 15 minutes all day. What I do then is move my bones. Each time something different. Just moving is better than nothing I hope.

I'm glad it looks good to you. I've had a few people have more an 'adverse' reaction to it. :)

I just can't get into exercise for exercise's sake, but I used to do all kinds of sports, both organized and not, and run around all day if I wanted to. Getting on a treadmill and jogging to nowhere, even with something like a television acting as some form of distraction, just doesn't do it.

I do need to get up more and move around, though. I understand even standing for extended periods a day is better than sitting all of it. I just get too involved in what I'm doing and the next thing I know, it's been three hours. :)

I get it. In my life Abbi is always calling on me to do something. It can take me hours to watch one showon TV. So glad to have pause button and DVR.

Howdy sir Glen! hey that's a great breakfast right there. Fast, easy, nutritious and tastes good. I can even make that one! The oatmeal makes it very filling too.

Not exactly keto, though. I might be caveman, or plank, or whatever that one is called where basically you eat whatever was available during the Paleozoic era. :)

I like it. It's quick enough, too, that I'm not spending a lot of time putting it together. I need to better job of having diced apples on hand so I don't have to cut them up every time.

I haven't even heard of the diet about the Paleozoic era, but it sounds good. lol.

It's called the paleo or caveman diet. I can't remember now if this is one I actually tried or not. It's a tougher one to do, too, since I think there's more restrictions.

Oh, well, I guess it's actually closer to keto than I thought. Grains aren't allowed, so my oatmeal is a fail, but the apple, pecans and egg all work. :)

Howdy sir Glen! wow no dairy, grains or sugars. At least Keto allows for organic butter and sour cream. That would be tough without those! Thanks for the link, that's interesting and it is fairly close to Keto. For most people it would be a huge improvement to follow either one.
