Gai jatra festival was introduced during the malla dynasty. in different ways in kathmandu th celebration starts form basantapur
where the procession is taken around the town with praticipants geared up in traditional. jogi or cow outfit, some even wear utterly bizarre outfit and make people laugh with their funny antics . where as in bhaktapura the traditional latthinach (stick dance) is perfomed during the procession like this
And since last couple of years a new trend has emerged witj the member of blue diamond society (BDS) as working for gay rights as taking out their own procession. a huge crowd gathered to see the member of BDS with much curiosity as like every year.
“Gai Jatra is a day that commemorates the dead, and people go out dressed-up as a man or woman based on the gender of the person who died in the family. In earlier days, women were not participating or allowed out in public Jatras, so men dressed up as women to add to the colour of the day, and substitute for the absent women.” Even today, the tradition continues, and we see many men, boys, kids dressed as women in ornate costumes, rouge and ornaments.

the festivals fall on the first day of the waning moon (eclipse) in the month of the bhadra
the celebration which literally means the festivals of cow is marked with many dance and drama performances of god goddes .
mainly in different places of the three districts- kathmandu lalitpur and bhaktapura
on this day family member of people who had died in the past one year dress in the attire of a cow and take out a rally
this tradition is still popular in the newari community
actual cow are also brought out in the rally as it is belived that cow help the deceased to make theri way to haven safely
the day is celebrated with a lot of merrymaking to compensate for thegrief of losing the love ones
this festival also has a powerful social face. Its also celebrated as conducts being practised in society
