Annie's Terrace

This is where the members of NATO – No Action, Talk Only – meets. Here, the members – retired folks and their younger friends, talk about anything and everything under the sun. It’s a very social and culturally educational evening listening to all present.

The representatives are friends of Annie’s, the hostess and/or friends of friends. They are a mix of expats working in Benalmadena, and foreigners retired and living here. They gather weekly on Monday evenings, to catch up on the latest. It’s also their way of looking out for each other. Family, and friends visiting are also invited.

It is early and still hot. Early arrivals seek the corner of the terrace for shelter from the sun and to have pre-dinner drinks.

On this occasion, the representatives are from Clockwise, Scotland, Singapore, New Zealand, America and the Denmark (Annie, the hostess)

On this occasion, the representatives are from – beginning clockwise with the ladies – Russia, Denmark (Annie, the host), Spain, Scotland, Singapore and Holland. This was pre-dinner drinks.

I was told that on one occasion, there were 11 people from 10 different countries. It wasn’t a planned thing, it just happened that most of those invited were free to come. Sometimes, who are going to turn up and who aren’t is anybody’s guess.

Dinner, is usually pot-luck, or order-ins. Talks and chit-chat continue after dinner as time permits, or until ageing folks need their beauty sleep. The atmosphere is causal, the chit-chat light, the company comradely and nice. (Only nice people are invited.)

Dinner table is not set. It's too hot and too windy, and too early.
