On with the cuckoo family for @featheredfriday
My last week's post for @featheredfriday was about koels, belonging to the cukoos order. And this week... the same order of birds it is! But this time, not a family-wrecking cuckoo! This one is a non-parasitic member of the cuckoo order, the great Coucal (Centropus sinensis).
They are big birds, reaching almost 50 cm! They have a long tail, coppery wings, and a big red eye. Both sexes are similar.
Coucals spend more time foraging on the ground than flying, feeding on a variety of insects and small vertebrates. These photos were taken in Malaysia, in Taman Negara National park, and up until recently, it was the only time I saw them.
In my last vacations, found them again, on a trip to Sri Lanka, this time in an urban setting: a botanical garden, in Kandy!
