FEAR FACTOR
So today has been a experience.. normally if I spend a day on the mountain I come back relaxed and refreshed... not today.. got a serious wake up call...
So this was the last pic I took before my phone died..
That's the way down the mountain where I have found myself stuck and paralyzed by fear... I shouldn't have attempted this climb. I took zero water. I'm not a experienced climber. I'm afraid of heights. I went alone. All the things you're not supposed to do.. I did.
When I dropped a rock off the edge it took about 4 mississippis to hit the ground.. 40 feet in my estimate... I tried to climb downbut fear wouldn't let my legs stop shaking... in fact here's a back story..
About a year ago I was visiting my friends @hustleking and @ mamabear72... they had a VR rock climbing game.. in the middle of their living room I played.. but was so scared my legs had me looking like Forrest Gump..
It's 10000 times more terrifying in real life.. but I got up here.. I gotta get back down..
I leaned over the edge feet first on my stomach and got my first foot hold... then a second.. the third was about 15 inches below my left leg and I eased onto it.. the next foot hold was on the right about 18 inches down below my right foot... reaching... success.. I was now head level with the top of the ledge.. 6 feet down... do that 2 or 3 more times and I would feel comfortable jumping the last 20 feet or so.. as I went to transfer my weight to my right foot the foothold I was standing on crumbled and fell to the canyon floor below. I wish I could say I stayed calm, didn't panic and froze in place.. what really happened was I clambered up that rock like a rat trying to escape a burning ship... fuck that there's another way down..
I made my way horizontally across the mountain face looking for a alternate route.. without success... then my phone died.. ok.. I really started to panic for a multitude of reasons.. falling to my death was clearly number one.. but dehydration and rattle snake bites were running neck and neck for second..
So left was out. Right was out. Down was out. Only one way left... ⬆️⬆️⬆️
See that huge rock wall behind me?
Dude. That's a big ass wall.. at least 100 feet of not 125... but could I climb it? I started nice and slow.. hand foot hand foot.. always 3 points of contact... no idea how long it took but it seemed like forever when i finally got up it..
Luckily the was like a 6 maybe 8 foot ledge thereand a spot where the rocks blocked the shade. I was absolutely exhausted and needed a break. So i took one and let the thoughts run rampant in my head... I was so thirsty.. in fact I licked the sweat off my arms for moisture.. I was probably the 20 minutes... sitting in the shade... enjoying the view... being mad cause my phone was dead and couldn't take pictures.. watching the bicyclist ride by... thinking about that cold beer back away camp... Wait... did I just see a bicyclist ride by?? Yeah. Sure did. It didn't register right away. Sure enough there were bicycle tracks on the dirt.. luckily about 3 minutes later here came another bicycle.. this time I flagged him down..
So apparently the bicycle route runs about 2 miles and ends at the BMX track about a mile down the road... he was very generous with his water.. in fact I drank it all..
I followed the path back to the track and hitched a ride back to camp.. hungry.. thirsty.. and tired.. but with a minimal amount of bodily harm.. in fact only a few scratches.. the worst of them..
I'm happy to have made it down safely without becoming a statistic.. currently having that fantasized about beer..
Remember ya'll. Safety first. Don't be a dummy like Dave
Wow, I'm so glad that you conquered your fears and got out of there alive! :) :) Great story telling Dave.
It made my butthole pucker up just reading that.
Glad you're not dead.
Me too.. that would have been a shitty day
Adventure!! lol. Next time maybe you could just hike up the bike path to the top. Wouldn't be so sketchy and you could still get the awesome view. I'm glad you found a way down. That last post left me in suspense... was thinking that might be your last post ever.
The bike path is pretty sketchy too.. insane to think riding down that
Glad you made it! I know that paralyzed feeling all too well from past hiking experiences. Enjoy a well deserved bowl and beer thirty you earned it!
But did you have fun? and now you have a beer!
Not really.. but i'm sure I'll look back and laugh one day
Dave , funny u say that!!! Cause this morning when U told Hustleking your predicament, that’s the first thing that came to my mine! I was like Crap why did he do that he’s afraid of heights , remember when he lost it playing the VR!! Glad you made it down ok!!
Me too.. cause it just started raining and storming
Holy crap, Dave, stay safe!!
Glad you made it down in one piece Dave
Enjoy that brewski my brotha!
Godspeed
Dude! Glad you made it down safely and with no broken bones! I had a moment like that snow boarding at loveland. Riding in the trees and fell in a tree well. Stuck up to my armpits in a snow hole with a board strapped to my feet. Hardest thing to do is not to panic. Chug a few of those beers man, you deserve it!
Panicking is always a first reaction lol.. but yeah it was kinda hairy..
