The whitefly is a pest that can affect a wide variety of plants. These can damage its development, production and quality. For this reason, it is essential to take control to prevent its spread.
This pest belongs to the Aleurodidae family and it is possible to detect at least 1500 types of them. These flies, in their adult stage, can measure from 1 to 1.5 mm. With respect to its structure, it can be said that the body of this fly is yellow and its wings are white, because they are covered with a kind of wax. The sap of the plants is the main food of the whitefly. To extract it, it uses its buccal apparatus that stings and sucks the leaf. These are usually located below the leaves.
If we detect that in our plants yellow spots, deformations and molasses are seen in the leaves, we could be facing an outbreak of these pests. By moving the leaves quickly, they will fly out of the place. This, in principle, will serve to detect the appearance of it.
How does the whitefly affect plants?
First of all, we can point out that the whitefly sucks the plant's sap leaving it without nutrients and water, harming its development. Second, this plague, by sucking the sap, impregnates the leaf with a molasses that can serve as a detonating agent for other diseases.
How to fight and treat the appearance of the whitefly?
Prevention:
Before entering the subject that occupies us in this section, it is convenient to express that prevention will be the key to keep our health, so it is recommended to be attentive to the evolution of them. Therefore, it is recommended, among other things:
Maintain adequate irrigation
Organically fertilize the earth.
Take into account the sowing calendar of the plants.
Strategically locate the planting site to make better use of sunlight.
Treatment:
However, if the plant (or crop) is already contaminated, it is best to start a treatment of ecological preference to treat it. In this case, it is recommended:
Eliminate them manually if our culture is not extensive. This can become tedious if it is large crops, however, if it were a small garden, it could be done.
Use a potassium soap This weakens the whitefly to death.
Use Neem oil. It should be used approximately one hour after potassium soap. This will help control this plague and others that may appear.
Clean the area of plants to prevent them from proliferating.
Planting other repellent plants can also be another way to avoid this type of pest. In this case, planting basil may be ideal for repelling insects.
The crushed garlic added to the irrigation water could also be a good option to combat this pest.
