What is thyme?

source

Thyme is a low and dense bush, between 10 and 30 cm high, of woody stems, with linear leaves, tiny, covered with a fine hairiness, and violet, light pink or white flowers, grouped in the Top end of the bouquets. It blooms from the end of March, but especially during the months of April to June. When we rub the florid bouquets we are impregnated with its powerful fragrance, which the experts define as hot, spicy, penetrating and herbaceous, and which emanates from the essence it contains.

There are about 40 different species of thyme; most are typical of the western half of the Mediterranean, and only in the Iberian Peninsula we have 28, some with very limited distribution. Thyme vulgaris vulgaris is long the most common. It is naturally distributed in the eastern half of the peninsula, plus Provence, in the south of France, and the west coast of Italy, in an arc that goes from Andalusia to the coasts of Naples, approximately.

In the center and south of the peninsula the thyme coexists or is replaced by a very similar species, also very fragrant, the graceful thyme Thymus zygis, which usually prefers more arid environments.

Thyme is used as a medicinal plant and as an aromatic herb.
