WATERLEAF AND ITS BENEFITS
Waterleaf is a herbaceous perennial plant that is widely grown in tropical regions as a leaf vegetable. I basically own a farm where I plant and nuture waterleaf for both commercial and domestic uses. Waterleaf can be used together with many other leaves to derive at a very delicious soup and it has many health benefits. Waterleaf contains alot of water and nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, crude fibre, lipids, crude protein etc which makes them very nutritious and medicinal in many different ways.
It goes with the botanical name: Talinum triangulare. As a leaf vegetable, Waterleaf is very rich in vitamins, including vitamins C and A. It is also rich in minerals such as calcium and iron. Because Waterleaf contains oxalic acid on the high side, consumption should be avoided or limited by those suffering from kidney disorders.
A Few Health Benefits of Waterleaf includes the following:
- Blood cells improvement
- It helps in keeping the heart healthy.
- Building of strong teeth and bones as a result of the presence of calcium in it.
- Promotes eye health
- It enhances blood clotting
- Waterleaf aids in repairing body tissues
- Elimination of infections and diseases
- Aids in the treatment of measles and other diseases like insomnia, anaemia
etc..
Consumption of waterleaf has a widespread of health and medicinal purposes. It is also worthy of note that too much consumption of this vegetable as side effects such as stomach upset and frequent stooling. So, lets be moderate in consuming it.
Waterleaf should not be underrated as it can function in many areas. Let's endeavour to add it in our daily menus.
