Milking in the Morning

Our morning started a little differently today as we rose early to head up to a family members farm to help with the milking of the cows. The farm is just outside Warragul, Victoria and run around 80 - 90 head of milkers. There were also around 10 ‘sooky calves’ or calves that have just been removed from their mothers. The farm generally keeps all of the female calves but sells the male calves as they are obviously not useful on a dairy farm. The herd has 2 bulls that ‘service’the cows and insemination is natural on this farm. Heifers are usually ‘serviced’after 2 years to have their first calf, after which they join the milking herd.

I believe it is educational and important for my mostly city-dwelling girls to see where the milk for their cereal actually comes from and the get down and dirty in the cow dung on the farm. I also took them for a ride on the 4 wheelers whilst we were there and they fed the calves as well.

Puffing Billy

Next stop o Good Friday was Emerald for lunch and a visit to see Puffing Billy the steam train. The line runs 25km from Belgrave to Gembrook through the Dandenong Ranges,just to the east of Melbourne. The line was opened in 1900 and closed in 1954. Restoration on the line began in 1962 and has been opened in stages since. It now runs as a tourist attraction, carrying passengers on daily services.

There are a lot of great sites in this country we call Australia. Get out there and look around!
