Meet Me at the Farmer's Market

Getting fresh, local produce and supporting local farmers and gardeners, farmer's markets are an excellent way to engage in your local community and improve your health. Buying at farmer's markets helps money stay circulating in the local economy. You can also ask directly to the producer what methods they use such as organic or pesticide-free and be confident your dollars are not supporting wasteful fossil fuels used in transporting foods across the country or internationally.

Foods that tastes better

Buying foods that are local and in season taste better. You will also find a great variety of produce including heirloom vegetables that never appear in chain stores and that the mighty corporations are busy running into extinction. Herbs, spices, canned and preserved foods, and other specialy and trendy items can also be found in abundance. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is another way to buy directly and locally from a farmer/gardener with weekly purchases.

Community Event

Farmer's markets are a great way to spend time with people in the local community and meet new neighbors. These local gatherings help reestablish the sense of community and are a great way to help kids deepen their understanding and familiarity with real foods. New farmer's markets are popping up all over where we live. As of 2014, the number of farmer's markets in the U.S. had grown to 8,268. Living in Wisconsin, there are now over 300 markets in the state and nationally it is ranked 8th for the most farmer's markets. In addition to foods, there are many craft products sold with a total of over 150,000 producers nationwide selling directly to consumers.
