The Oat Crop - Some different views.

in #farm7 years ago

Field of Oats which has been grazed by Cattle. When the crop has been eaten down fairly low, Cattle will be moved to another paddock so as this field can recover again.

Ungrazed area of Oats in another field. Oats like this provide a good bulk of feed for the Cattle. It allows the farmer to "add value " to his Cattle by increasing their weight, as Cattle are sold mainly by their Live Weight . Oats provide a good deal of energy and nutrients for Cattle and they put on weight quickly, as much as 1.5 kg per day, that's a lot of meat !

Photo showing the contrast between an Oat Crop on the right, with natural pasture on the left. As is the case with us humans, Cattle also need a balanced diet. After a while on the Oat Crop, the cattle are moved onto an area of natural pasture. This will provide much needed roughage in the diet. Most of the time, if the gate is left open, cattle will move themselves over to the next paddock as they also feel the need for a bit of a change in diet.

Oats like this - in the photos - are just a different variety of Oats that you use for your Oatmeal or Porridge in the Mornings for breakfast. If there are too many Oats in the fields for the Cattle to eat, the Farmer will make Oaten Hay from the crop. This way, he can use the Oats all year round. Oats are grown here in Australia mainly in the Winter months ( from about May to August ).

1.5kg per day? Wow!!! I wonder how they don't turn into whales?

They can end up looking like Hippo's.

Hi @ctrl-alt-nwo I've published a post about you, check it out if you can, thanks.

Thanks for the honourable mention mate !

Very interesting! So we cannot grow oats in Thailand, because it is too hot and humid. I like porridge very much, I would like to see oat 'flowers and seeds'. Are they a bit like rice crops? Cheers.

The seed heads look a bit like wheat. The flowers are so tiny you cannot really see well. Rice looks similar, but heads are drooping down, Oats and wheat heads are upright. Yeah i love porridge too !

That is good to know, I thought that they are only fed with hay and grass.
Does a hay give them nutrition? I can't seem to understand it.

Cattle are fed with many things. If you feed them with a crop or natural grass, thats economical. If you feed hay its expensive if you have to buy it. There are many different types of hay, as usual the expensive stuff is better and has plenty of nutrients, the cheap not so good.

I see, I am learning from you ha ha.
So you just wait for buyers of your cattles then after they are ready for selling?
Or the buyers come to you?

You can either sell the Cattle direct to people, or you can take them to an auction market. Mostly the Auctions we use.

Oh I see, it is like on the fish market where they put the fish on for a bid by the fishermen.

Yeah, a bit like that.

Lovely. Over here in my Country, Our cattle heardsmen lack proper sanitization, they allow their cattles to feed on all sort of craps, and destroy properties. I hope the government wakes up from their slumber.

I find it hard to imagine why a farmer would destroy his property. After all, if he destroys it, it will no longer provide him with an income. Here in Australia, there are a few silly farmers, but most are good and hardworking and do the right thing. In my experience the Government makes things very hard for the Farmer. If anybody from the Government says " i'm here to help you" then you need to be worried, very worried. Also, find out facts for yourself, that way you find the truth. Don't listen to the media, they're liars...fake news !

Interesting to see how my breakfast grows. I like to eat cooked oat rice which i presoak over night. Fantastic meal. Cattles know what is good ;)

Yeah, the leaves of the oats actually taste sweet, thats why they put on so much weight, the calories in it. They have good fibre content too, give you a good cleanout:)

Do you irrigate the pastures with a sprinkler system or some other way? Or do you get rain in the winter months.

We just rely on rain. Iit's been dry lately so the dew is keeping it going.

I must appreciate this post :) good one, also check mine please :)
