Goblins - A Fan Production

in #fandom6 years ago

Yesterday I visited one of our local sci-fi and fantasy yearly conventions called Olamot. As usual the convention was packed with costumed individuals having fun and with traders coming to commercialize our shared hobbies.

I didn't have a lot of time at the con but I still managed to snap a few quick shots of some costumes.

Like I said I didn't have a lot of time at the con but there was at least one thing I really wanted to see - the fan production.

There is a long tradition of fan productions in the community. There has not been a year in the past decade or so without a fan theater production. Some years there was a fan made movie or musical as well.

This year the play "Goblins" was inspired by the book "Nine Goblins" by T. Kingfisher. I haven't read the book yet but I'm definitely interested now.

The plot was adapted to the stage and I really liked the adaptation and execution. For example, they decided that Elvish is Spanish so when speaking 'Goblin', the language everyone understands to some degree, the elves had a Spanish accent. The first Elvish phrase in the play is 'dónde está el baño' which translates to 'Where is the bathroom'. Apparently the goblin linguist only knows one phrase in elvish and this is it :)

Without giving away too much of the plot, there is a war brewing between humans and goblins. A small band of goblins find themselves, due to unforeseen magic, stranded behind enemy lines in the human territory. Worse - they are in the Elves' forest. Now they have to find their way back overcoming all sorts of dangers and hopefully, promoting peace between the races.

Here are a few shots I took of the play.

It was a well made production from adaptation to acting, props (a beautifully lit LED camp fire for example), costumes and makeup.

I hope the same group will have a hand in following fan productions.

I'm interested in hearing about fan productions and cons in your area.

Feel free to tell me all about it in the comments.
