New law aimed at keeping kids with their family.

Here is an article by the Winnipeg Sun about a new law aimed at assisting families in poverty.
Rather then stealing their children and placing them into a foster home for reasons related to poverty they will aid these families. This sounds very good to me and I hope it makes it in to law.

The article states the the new law would assist struggling families rather then stealing their children. The bill would prevent social workers from stealing kids for issues related to poverty.

The article is quoted as "A new piece of legislation proposed by the NDP on Wednesday would see children stay in their own homes if their families fall into financial hardship and not fall into the hands of Child and Family Services.
The private member’s bill would prevent social workers from apprehending children from their homes due to poverty-related issues, Point Douglas MLA Bernadette Smith said at the Manitoba Legislature.
“So if a family doesn’t have enough food, then we figure out a way to get them the food that they need rather than apprehending the kids,” Smith said.
Smith said social workers are trying to keep kids at home, but lack the proper support from government to that would ensure those supports will be there when families need them.
The new legislation would make it so that social workers looked at every possible avenue before taking a child from their home.
"I know that there’s amazing foster parent families out there that provide a step-up level from what the government provides,” Smith said. “What we’re saying is that our government needs to provide that same amount of care in homes to families that need that support.”
Manitoba holds the highest rate of children in care in Canada at around 11,000 kids.

I like the sound of this law as it seems like it would actually help families struggling with poverty.

Minister of Child and Family Services Scott Fielding dismissed the claim that kids are taken from families because of poverty related issues and is quoted in the article as saying "The reason why someone would be taken by apprehension would be something like neglect, something like sexual abuse, if a parent is unable to care for a child," and "To be fair, some of that is in poverty. The linkage is between mental illness as well as addictions and everything else. There’s a very big linkage that’s there"

Scott Fielding also stated that the provinces "landmark reform" of the CFS system is half way though its process.

Point Douglas MLA Bernadette Smith is quoted as saying "We have a new customary care model that’s coming into effect in the next few months, this would essentially support those families who don’t fall under that customary are model."

I hope this law that protects families struggling with poverty comes into effect soon. Manitoba has many families struggling with poverty. Once when I was looking for interviews at Shalom which is a place where people who struggle in poverty can go eat meals I seen children there.
I thought to myself that this is no place for kids to be, I thought to myself that more needs to be done to help these poor families.
