Miskanawah

Miskanawah is an organization in the prairies that works on behalf of First Nations with the Child Services system in order to create an environment of healing for Kids in the Child Services system.

Over the last few weeks they’ve been taking Child services personnel out to the land to teach them culturally accepted ways to work with native kids.

And I have no idea how to feel about this.

They’re sleeping out there, Living in tents, having smudgings, traditional meals and sweats.

And I’m wondering how this helps the kids?

I’m absolutely for the children being treated and helped get through a difficult situation but there’s no way on earth the services people are going to do any of the things they’re being taught.

If I’m in a bad place and a white guy goes “so I’m going to bring out the smudge” my thought isn’t he wants to help, my thought would be he’s being racist and I’d want to leave.

Does it help the native family in financial trouble get through it?

No.

I don’t see how it helps and think they should be in the classroom learning better ways to help the kids get through and out of the system faster.
