history
The Jago and the Revolutionaries of Jakarta was the first in-depth review of one of the people's militias who joined the struggle for Indonesian independence in 1945. This book traces the history of the Lasykar Rakyat Jakarta Raya since its origins, the petty criminals, the slave laborers in the slums of Jakarta and feudal estates in the outskirts of Jakarta, until their destruction at the hands of the Indonesian army in the late 1940s. This book also highlights the bitter process in which the new Republic of Indonesia must eliminate and suppress the groups that are rescuers when its rise to power.
The records of the archives, the newspapers at the time and the interviews with the surviving actors were used to provide a new view of the early history of the Indonesian army. The data indicate a perplexing political situation in which regular and nonregular units, staff officers and the Defense Ministry compete for influence and struggle to formulate guerrilla warfare strategies.
The book concludes with the authors' conclusion of a coalition between the black world of Jakarta and the radical young nationalists in the era of movement. The coalition between the black world of Jakarta and the radical nationalist group that culminates in the form of Lasykar Rakyat Jakarta Raya is the result of an unusual situation. The nationalists saw the Jago as one of the few elements of Indonesian society under colonialism who had fighting skills. While the Jago, who in the action of their criminal subculture contain social stubbornness, see nationalism as a chance to gain a future in which they can be recognized and respected as the possessor of legitimate power in their community.
