A walk with the family

As our winter here in Australia is coming to an end the sun is starting to make more of a prominent appearance.
It’s this time of year that my family and I often take advantage of the warm clear days by going on a walk through the Barossa Goldfields which are a series of walking tracks through an old historical gold mine (about 5 minuets drive from where I live).

—Here’s some brief history—
Gold was discovered here in around 1866 by the local pub owner, and by 1868 approximately 2000 people had rushed to the area. By the end of 1868 that number doubled to 4000 people but by 1871 the rush was over. According to historians roughly 50,000 lbs of gold were extracted from these parts.

Even though we’ve done this particular track many times it seems there’s always something new to see, the scenery is truly beautiful and the kids are always so excited peer down the old mine shafts.

This walk was a great start to the day and a good excuse to get out and about. We usually complete this particular walk in just under an hour (we have a few stops on the way of course) I think this track is about 1.5 kms round trip. If the weather is good next week end we might pack some extra snacks and try tackle one of the longer walking tracks (approx 6kms)
