Growing Generous Hearts!

in #family7 years ago

After the kiddos went to bed last night, my wife shared about a conversation she had with our youngest daughter earlier in the day. I am amazed by the words of my 4-year-old.

The Conversation

Daughter:I got some money, mama.
Wife:Ok, what are you going to do with it?
Daughter:I want to help some people who are poor.
Mmmm ... maybe I can give it to someone who does not have enough food.
Maybe I can give it to someone who needs a home.
Maybe if someone needs a home they can come live with us.

My Response

It is a humbling experience to hear such kind words coming from the mouth of your child. There was a sense of pride that welled up inside my heart and at the same time, there was a sense of conviction that overwhelmed me.

I was proud that she wanted to help others. I was convicted about whether or not I was helping others enough.

Some Background Information

When our family moved back to the United States, our world was shaken. More than 2 years later we are still healing emotionally. We often talk about how we miss our overseas life and the friends we grew to love

From a provisional perspective, I feel blessed to have a job that helps provide for basic needs of my family over the last 14 months. It was tough being unemployed for more than 4 months.

But even with a decent job, we have been dependent on the kindness of others. We are not paying full rent for the house we live in now, and come July we will need to be in a new place. My mom and dad showed sacrificial love by paying more than half the cost for the van that is big enough for our family. Friends and acquaintances have passed along nice used clothes that they don't need anymore. At times, people have even given us cash or checks, "just because" they were thinking about us.

We are blessed! But as a husband and father, I sometimes feel overwhelmed. My wife and I don't hide things from our kiddos. We talk to them about using money wisely and that we can't buy everything we want. We have conversations about finances that they overhear.

But one thing is clear! My kiddos know that they are blessed. They know that there are other people in the world with greater needs, and they desire to help those people.

Growing Generous Hearts!

I credit my wife for their kindness. She sure is a great example of love and generosity. She serves others with passion and with a smile on her face

I know that our desire to live our faith plays an important role in this. We have taught our kiddos to show love (even we people don't appear lovely). We have taught them to use part of their allowance to bless others as an expression of their personal faith. We want to encourage to look outside out four walls to be light into a hurting world.

I am humbled. I am blessed, and I have been charged with being a blessing to others!

Such beautiful words coming from a 4 year old. You must know this is because you and your wife set that example every day. Nurture that attitude, it will find its place in her heart forever! We need more of that in our world today. So blessed you are :)

Credit goes to you and your wife for raising your children so well, what a beautiful point of view for a 4 year old to have.
Obviously she picked this up from watching you and her mother, and is something you should feel pride and blessing in
