The Gifted Kid who Needs HelpsteemCreated with Sketch.

Hello Steemit Family!

I recently had a formal assessment done on my 4-year old daughter who was showing signs of having behavioral problems, turned out that she was suffering boredom because the results shows that she is gifted/borderline genius. Although this is exciting news, I am at discontent because I am not exactly sure how to parent her the way a gifted child should be parented and what programs to put her in.

I am aware that there are tonnes of information on the internet but with a lot of inconsistency.

I am reaching out because there must be someone here who can help - giving advice from personal experience.

This is a serious request for help!

Thanks so much!

What about after-school programs for grade 1 kids or homeschooling? I wouldn't recommend skipping her ahead since the age gap is a bigger problem for kids than an intelligence gap.

She will be starting French immersion kindergarten in September and is currently in daycare. I am not so sure the homeschooling would work given that she is a social butterfly who likes having people around...but it is definitely something I will look into. Why do you think the age gap would be a problem?

When I was a kid I got skipped a few grades and it messed me up for the rest of the school years. Kids can't make friends when they're years younger than everyone around them all the time. That's why I suggested an after school activity instead.

Makes perfect sense, thank you so much for your feedback.

School early on has very little to do with acquiring knowledge (except for specifics in learning to read). It is about learning to wait your turn, not interrupt, share, listen, etc. Gifted kids need that as much (if not more) than most other kids.

I'm surprised to hear she is having behavior problems in a 4-year old classroom. I've known quite a few gifted kids (my own and others) and none have had problems in preschool. There should be enough flexibility and attention in any classroom to meet a kid where they are. If they are sitting doing worksheets and she is finishing before everyone else and acting up, then the curriculum is bad. It should really be very free-form and play-centric at this age.

Thank you for your feedback @beriberi!

It could appear like she has behavioral problems but that is not the case, it is only because she is bored. I will definitely check out the resource you sent me.
