In 1956, Mao Zedong, the head of the Chinese Communist Party, declared a campaign of openness toward critics of the regime and encouraged the public to criticize public opinion about any part of the regime and its functioning without being persecuted for their opinions. The campaign was called "The Hundred Flowers Campaign" from a quote from his speech that year: "Let a hundred flowers blossom, let a hundred schools of thought argue."
Needless to say, even if the campaign was really successful, according to Communist tradition, the Communist Party quickly realized that this was a great way to get rid of all its critics. that a lot of them exposed themselves thanks to the Hundred Flower Campaign.
