Mark Zuckerberg Acknowledges Importance of Cryptocurrencies and Decentralization

in #facebook7 years ago (edited)

Just a few days ago, Facebook investor Peter Thiel announced that he’s been holding between $15-20 million in cryptocurrency, which correlated to a 10% price jump for Bitcoin after a week-long slump.

And now today in a post on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg mentioned cryptocurrency and decentralization as the keys to a better future, also noting that his intentions with Facebook from the beginning was to “give people the power.”

Mark goes on to explain that encryption and cryptocurrency are important counter-trends to the current centralization of the internet.

Zuckerberg hopes to turn this trend around; while Facebook may have taken the brunt of this centralization take-over, there are hundreds of decentralized social networks popping up in the crypto world. Zuckerberg’s full post can be seen below:

Decentralized Social Networking

Steemit, a well known decentralized network, is the most widely used of all token-driven social networks. It is a social media platform that pays users for creating content. The more popular a post becomes, the more STEEM (currently priced at $7.01) that user receives.

It’s great to see Zuckerberg addressing an issue that has been on everybody’s mind. With the rise of big data consumption, users of the mainstream internet find it hard to feel safe with their information.

Additionally, the algorithms used to curate the internet just put the players in smaller boxes. It’s getting harder to see the other side of things because advertising only wants to provide what is relevant to the consumer.

Mark Zuckerberg validating these points is a big deal, and while no concrete changes have been made to turn this ship around, he does write that this will be a “serious year of self-improvement” and admits that decentralization is that best way to get Facebook onto a better trajectory.

Doubtful the likes of Mark Zuckerberg has any fears of steemit as a competitive model, as they serve very different purposes (publication vs. social media).

@lifted

Facebook has a lot of fame and is heavily involved, but there is no profit or material gain. But Steemit has a material and moral benefit and has a great future

well, Steemit may not be a threat to FB now or anytime in the near future. But I'm pretty sure, in the next 5 to 10 years, we could see some really interesting stuff happening. The Internet is old and it time to see some changes to decentralize the power held by the few people. Steem on!

Very intresting

very good news. excellent for bitcoin

thanks for ur sharing

Good info. This is the first time I'm seeing Steemit not being referred to as "social media" but as a publication site. A lot of people seem to refer Steemit as a social media platform. What do you think? Also.. although the blockchain platform of steemit is awesome, I don't necessarily feel safer with the information I put out here. Not having the ability to delete or edit things after a while doesn't make me feel autonomous in curating the content I publish here. This is the kind of thing I'm curious about and want to get other opinions on it, before I delve too deeply in the steemit world :)

Unfortunately, Facebook is not decentralized, and because of its government affiliation, this may be coming up now because they are looking for more way to control those who have not awakened yet.
So much #fakenews on Facebook. I wouldn't even dare to get one unit of their crypto currency. That's just me.
