[EXCLUSIVE]! The New Facebook Drone ...

in #facebook7 years ago (edited)

The UAV  of Facebook completed its second flight last May, flying for an hour and 46 minutes. Facebook made a detailed breakdown of the flight and explained the changes made to the plane after the initial test failed because of a windstorm that hit Aquila off its track. The pilot's attempt to correct the route resulted in the plane moving faster than intended.

This time, Facebook has added "hundreds of sensors" to collect additional data. Specifically, software modification in the pilot, stabilizing the horizontal fan mechanism to stop the mechanisms to support the successful landing, increasing the drag and reduce lift during the landing approach.

Facebook is clearly going into deep details about how the wind affects flying. The Aquila crew seems to be watching the wind throughout the day and loading the landing plan on a wind direction. Overall, Facebook says it learned from the failures of the first trip to improve the second.

It was conceived by CEO Mark Zuckerberg first envisioning Aquila in 2014 as a possible way to bring the Internet to the natives. His goal is to have Aquila able to operate at full capacity in just a few years.
