Major social media services including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were hit by a major scandal on Monday.

The company said it "knew some people were having trouble finding the Facebook app" and was working to regain access.

The company did not say what could have caused the power outage, which began at 9.15pm IST. It is common for websites and applications to suffer, although one at a global level is rare. Users have reported not being able to access Facebook in California, New York and Europe.

Reuters could not immediately confirm a service problem. However, an error message on the Facebook web page suggested a Domain Name System (DNS) error.

DNS allows web addresses to redirect users to their destination.

The Downdetector, which tracks only exit by compiling status reports from a range of sources, including user-generated errors on its platform, has shown that there are more than 50,000 cases of people reporting issues via Facebook and Instagram.

Meanwhile, the giant instant messaging platform was also down to more than 22,000 users, while Messenger was down to about 3,000. WhatsApp was also the best on Twitter, with more than 850,000 tweets.
