• stinging or burning
• loss of vision

• eye pain
• one eye is not moving like the other
• decreased vision
• one eye is sticking out or bulging
• redness and irritation
• double vision
• bruising around the eye
• light sensitivity
• blood in the white part of the eye
• bleeding from the eye
• severe itching
• discharge from the eye
• new or severe headaches

Visit an emergency room or an urgent care center if there’s an injury to your eye, or if you have sudden vision loss, bleeding, swelling or pain in the eye.

What not to do if you have an eye injury

Serious complications can occur due to an eye injury. However you should not attempt to treat yourself. Though you may be tempted to do so ensure not to:

• try to remove foreign objects that are stuck in any part of your eye
• rub or apply pressure to your eye
• put any medications or ointments in your eye
• use tweezers or any other tools in your eye (cotton swabs can be used but only on the eyelid)

If you wear contact lenses then do not take them out if you think that you have suffered an eye injury. This is because attempting to remove your eye contacts can make the eye injury worse. The only exceptions to this rule are in situations wherein you have a chemical injury and your contact lenses did not flush out with water or where you cannot receive immediate medical help. In case of an eye emergency, the best thing you can do is to get to your doctor as soon as possible.
