My Experience Today: The Reaction of Some Nigerian Youths

in #experience7 years ago

Good day, wonderful steemian, it is a wonderful Sunday over here and so we say happy Sunday to every of our friends and loved ones.
I am supposed to continue the series of my emotional story, but I decided to take a break because I felt I should share this heart touching experience I had today.

I went to church as a Christian and I must say it was a wonderful experience, after service I was outside the church when I noticed that some people were looking towards a particular direction and crowd had begun to gather already. I like looking out for every opportunity around me to write a post, my friends say I like amebo which means pocknosing but I don't mind, as long as it turns out to be a good post, then I am good to go.

In order to satisfy my curious mind, I moved closer to the scene and I realized that some young guys were beating a boy which I think should be around the age of twenty-five, they slapped, kicked and did all sort of things to him as they stripped him naked. I know you want to know what he did and I will tell you just hold on a little bit longer.

One lady just shouted, oh my God this is so unfair, how will a human beat a fellow human like this, no matter what he has done no one has the right to beat another person, a guy then whispered into her ear, he said madam you better watch what you say here before they beat you too.

They removed the things in his pocket and they found about twenty stolen sim cards, which means he had been stealing phones and removing the sim cards but he was actually in the act of stealing clothes from the line when he was caught this time around.

I left the scene to stand far away from where the beating was going on with some other people who were watching from a distance, you know for security reasons, anything can happen.

Where I stood, still watching the beating process, some people started to discuss.

Boy: I wish this was Lagos o, they will have just burnt him straight away instead of this unnecessary wasting of time.

Girl: Why would they burn someone, that is inhumane.

Boy: Are you serious, okay so the thief is humane?

Girl: The fact that he was caught in the process doesn't make him a thief, all these top politicians stealing money are they, not thieves or these yahoo boys everywhere?
Those who take out of their friend's water in the hostel without telling them it is also an act of theft, so the fact that someone was caught in the act does not mean that the person should be killed.

In fact, the majority of these people who beat thieves are rapist and thieves as well.
Do you even know the reason why they steal, maybe they have no money or food to eat?

Boy: Sister, please have you in any way experienced any robbery attack?

Girl: No I have not.

Boy: Have your phone ever been stolen?

Girl: No, it has not.

Boy: Has any of your relatives been shot dead by a thief?

Girl: No, God forbid.

Boy: Now I know the reason why you are sounding that way, you do not have anything to say again, just keep quiet.

I ran off quickly because I know I have a lot of work to do at home and I had to share the story to know what your view about it is.
Thanks for reading through my blog, I really appreciate.
I remain your humble Nigerian girl @oluwatobiloba.

Sort:

It is not good to beat someone and kill them for any reason whatsoever. There is a due process for it in the law.

I don't think some frustrated people over here understand that, they feel if they take the thief to the police station they might find their way out, so the best thing is to take the law into their own hands.

'Jungle Justice' they say...so stupid. I see it as some sort of deranged or no enlightenment on the part of peeps who do this.

very true brother, thanks for stopping by

Despite education, even in our Nigerian universities( I am very sure of obafemi awolowo university) Criminals are still beaten brutally, sometimes they strip them naked and walk them round the school hostels. A lot of people would pour stinking water on them, some will beat them with belts.

Really? Despite the education, they still behave in such savage manner?

The funniest thing is that despite the beatings, the criminal wont stop such shameful act. They will still steal, get caught and be rallied over and over again.

But what do you think could be done to help them stop this shameful act, because getting them arrested somehow does not get the problem solved due to the fact that corruption has eaten so deep into the system that they might even get released the next day and come back for the person who got them arrested.
